It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the sudden passing of William Roman Husarewycz on July 25, 2026, at the age of 42. William was a powerhouse in the Canadian judo community, leaving an indelible mark as an elite heavyweight competitor, black belt, and newaza (ground-grappling) technician.
William’s journey on the mat began when he was just 8 years old. Over the next three decades, he dedicated his life to the sport, exemplifying the core judo values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. Training primarily out of the West Kildonan Judo Club with Sensei Mark Berger, his lifelong dedication culminated in a historic milestone when he was crowned the first-ever Newaza Grand Champion at the 2018 Judo Canada Open National Championships in Calgary. Beyond his national title, he proudly represented Manitoba on international stages, earning podium finishes at events like the Liberty Bell Judo Classic and the Hatashita International.
William’s presence on the mat, his remarkable grappling expertise, and his lifelong camaraderie will be deeply missed by his training partners, coaches, and peers across the province. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the West Kildonan (B.P.) Judo Club community during this difficult time.
For those wishing to pay their respects, a visitation will be held on Friday, August 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel (1442 Main St). The funeral service will take place Saturday, August 8, at 9:30 a.m. at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral (115 McGregor St.), followed by a reception at the Masonic Memorial Temple (420 Corydon Ave.) from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
